Turkey “paralyzes” 1/3 of its steel production capacity after the historic earthquake

In Türkiye, the aftermath of the historic earthquake on February 6 directly affected the country’s steel production capacity. Major steel mills in southern Turkey are expected to remain closed for weeks now, with production lines down and workers trying to cope with the impact of a massive double earthquake that rocked the region area. According to Veysel Yayan, general secretary of the Turkish Steel Manufacturers Association, about a dozen facilities in Iskenderun and Osmaniye near the epicenter of the February 6 quake – accounting for a third of national steel production. He said that although factories in the area were not physically damaged, many workers or their family members were killed, while survivors struggled to make a living in makeshift conditions. Turkey is among the top 10 global steel producers and exporters, and the industry was one of the first to make an assessment of the damage caused by the deadliest earthquakes to hit the country in nearly a century.
